Comparing and Contrasting

Weighs A and B equally

  • In a lens or keyhole comparison you weigh A less heavily than B, or use A to be a lens for B, A as a framework for uinderstanding B and vice versa
  • Thesis = show the assertion that A and B are very similar yet not so similar after all
  • Good paper must take raw data- similarities and differences you've observed and make them come into a meaningful argument

5 Elements Required

  1. Frame of reference- umbrella which you have grouped them by theme, idea, theory , question or problem
  2. Ground for comparison- rational behind your cause
  3. Thesis- convey the gist of your argument
  4. Organizational scheme- a) text by text- discuss all A then B or b) point by point alternate points about A with comparable points about B
     5. Linking A and B together- all papers require you to link each point in the argument back to the thesis-  logically and systematically advance your argument and links between A and B in the body to hold it together.
